PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Wisconsin Housing & Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) office building was key to the redevelopment of the former Mautz Paint Company site. WHEDA was designed to complement the current neighborhood, the building recalls the industrial brick loft-style buildings of the historic area while also incorporating modern steel, divided light windows, and a third-floor skywalk to connect employees to the five-story parking ramp. The tight site — bordered by a neighboring hotel and construction project — required daily coordination between trades. The project utilized a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system for improved efficiency; due to the diversity provided by simultaneous heating and cooling, VRF systems require less energy consumption than conventional heat pump systems.
